What do you get if you add 8 flat tires, thousands of biting flies, 6 hot spring tubs, 50 kilometers of dusty roads, a broken down playground, a couple of miracles and 32 willing hearts (and pairs of hands)? When we added it up this summer we had one of the most amazing weeks of our lives...
A team of youth and leaders from Mission Youth Unlimited and others from The Cross Current Church and the Mission Friendship Centre spent a week in August (16-22) in the remote, First Nations village of Skatin (North of Harrison Lake). In one incredible, work and fun filled week we were able to tear down the old playground and build a new one, renovate and paint the community hall, clean and repair most of the woodstoves and furnaces in the town and do many other odd jobs. We also built friendships with many of the locals, bonded as a team, ate amazing meals (including fresh salmon), soaked for hours in the hot springs, learned some first nation dances and got invited back next year. We are already planning our return trip next summer and have about 50 people wanting to go and a number of jobs lined up!
P.S. A video of the trip is available for viewing at http://vimeo.com/6289085
