“New” Facility Helps Homeless Youth in Mission – Grand Opening of MY House this Wednesday
Mission, BC—Mission has a new facility to help homeless youth. Mission Youth House (or as the youth affectionately call it, “MY House”) provides homeless, street entrenched and vulnerable youth (ages 12-22) with a place to find safe access to showers, laundry, meals, employment opportunity, life skills, youth specific medical care and trusting relationship with caring adults. On Wednesday, September 30, 2015, the public are invited to the grand opening and to have a tour.
This facility is the result of an amazing story of the greater community working together to come up with a way to help homeless youth. MY House is a collaborative effort and is not owned or operated by one single entity. It is operated and governed by a collaboration of community organizations, local government, churches and concerned citizens.
“Two years ago a committee was started to help find a solution for homeless youth in Mission,” explains Calvin Williams, Youth Unlimited youth worker. “Things were getting worse and we knew we needed to do something about it.”
MY House became a reality through the efforts and generosity of over 2,000 volunteer hours, $20,000 in donated cash, $65,000 in donated professional services and $37,000 in donated product and supplies.
The building that is now MY House was once an abandoned house frequented by squatters, crime and drug users and was ready to be torn down. This summer, renovations were complete and MY House opened to some of the teens late August.
“Earlier this month, a teen boy came through the house, and we offered him a few services like a shower and to stay for dinner,” says Calvin. “‘It’s a miracle there’s a place like this,’ he said. ‘It’s exactly what I needed.’” Calvin explains that according to RCMP statistics, there are 25 homeless youth in Mission at any given time.
Media outlets are warmly invited to attend the grand opening on Wednesday, and to report on this new service as well as on the unique story of the community working together to offer help to homeless youth.
Phase two of this project will be an overnight homeless shelter, specifically for Youth, as the current house cannot accommodate overnight stays.
