Andrew Chong

As area director for Youth Unlimited North Shore, I lead a team of youth workers that partners with local schools, government, churches, businesses, and community groups. Working in my hometown is something special—I grew up in Lynn Valley and I’ve had the chance to run a lunchtime hockey league at Sutherland Secondary, the school I graduated from. I love bringing people together, helping young people see their potential, and creating spaces that lead to transformation.

You can usually find me at JJ Bean on Lonsdale, having tea with a young person. Every now and then, you might spot me driving our Mobile Youth Drop-In RV (an ’82 Winnebago) en route to Mountainside, Carson, or some other place where youth gather. And depending on the time of year, you may see Instagram posts (@yunorthshore) of me leading our team of CityFEST leaders (I am the event coordinator), directing summer camp at Anvil Island, or bringing a team of North Shore youth to Kigali (as part of a partnership with Youth Unlimited in Rwanda).

I live in Central Lonsdale with my wife Jennifer, an emergency nurse at Lions Gate Hospital—we have a mystery-breed rescue dog named MILO. In my past life, I did some reporting for the Vancouver Canucks and was the editor of a national hockey magazine.
